Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Daily Caller founder Neil Patel penned an article together in which they chided President Trump for trying to get Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.
“Donald Trump should not have been on the phone with a foreign head of state encouraging another country to investigate his political opponent, Joe Biden,” the pair said in the Wednesday article published by the Daily Caller. “Some Republicans are trying, but there’s no way to spin this as a good idea.”
While chastising Trump for the call, however, Carlson and Patel stated that it’s “hard to argue” that the president’s mistake was “an impeachable offense.” They point to the Justice Department not considering Trump to have broken any laws.
The pair said they believed any impeachment proceedings should be bipartisan because the process is inherently “the most extreme and anti-democratic remedy we have in our system of government.”
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced last week she is backing an impeachment inquiry based off a phone call the president had with Ukraine’s leader in which he asked for their government to investigate Biden. Democrats also contend that the president was threatening to withhold military aid to the Ukrainians if they did not investigate.
Last week, Tucker Carlson and fellow Fox News host Shepard Smith sparred over Democrats opening Trump impeachment proceedings.
Andrew Napolitano, a Fox News contributor, went on Smith’s show to say that Democrats were right to begin an impeachment inquiry. Carlson then had former U.S. Attorney Joe diGenova on his show, who proceeded to take swipes at Napolitano, calling him a “fool.”
Smith later took aim at Carlson on his show the next day, saying his failure to defend his colleague was “repugnant.”
