Four people have been confirmed dead in a bus crash on I-95 brought on by possible “driver fatigue,” according to news reports. The accident took place about 25 miles north of Richmond.
The commercial tour bus flipped early Tuesday morning, according to the Associated Press.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell told WTOP that the bus originated in North Carolina and was bound for New York. It appears that 50 to 60 people were on board, he said.
A two-mile stretch surrounding mile marker 103 has been shut down, with traffic diverted off the freeway.
Emergency responders have taken over the area in an “all hands on deck” mode, McDonnell said. The interstate is expected to open again by noon Tuesday.
McDonnell would not comment on the need for more federal regulation of interstate bus routes, saying it was too early to tell.
