Rev. Billy Graham to lie in honor in US Capitol

The Rev. Billy Graham, who died at 99 on Wednesday, will lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, Speaker Paul Ryan announced Thursday, and members of the public are invited to pay their respects.

Ryan said Graham’s casket will be in the Rotunda on Feb. 28. House and Senate lawmakers will participate in a service for Graham, who counseled U.S. presidents and was a beloved spiritual figure in America for six decades.

Graham will be only the fourth private citizen to lie in honor in the Capitol, and the first to do so in more than 17 years.

Rosa Parks was the last private citizen to lie in honor, an event that took place in October 2005.

Presidents and elected officials have lain in state in the Rotunda.

Sen. Senator Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, who died in December of 2012, was the most recent elected official to lie in state.
