The retiring director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons has been charged with drunken driving in Maryland.
Harley Lappin, 55, was pulled over by Anne Arundel County police in Annapolis shortly before 4 a.m. on Feb. 26. Court records show Lappin has been charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and other related offenses.
He did not cause an accident.
Lappin announced his retirement, which takes effect May 7, last week. A Department of Justice spokeswoman told Main Justice, which first reported the charges, that Lappin had decided to retire before the arrest.
A court hearing in the case is scheduled for June 16.
