College swimmer Riley Gaines has responded after a video from CPAC appeared to show her dodging a kiss from former President Donald Trump.
Gaines, a former college swimmer for the University of Kentucky who has gained national attention after speaking out against transgender athletes competing in female sports, was taking the stage on Saturday night in Dallas when video appeared to show her pull her head away from Trump’s as he leaned in to kiss her on the cheek.
The swimmer dismissed the controversy, saying she turned her head to hear the president better, rather than to avoid any contact.

“In no way, shape, or form did I ‘dodge a kiss’ from Trump nor was I uncomfortable on that stage with him at any point in time,” Gaines wrote on Instagram. “I slightly turned my head so I could hear what he was saying to me. Proof that not everything you read is factual. But keep clutching at straws, it’s almost comical.”
Gaines also said it was an honor to share the stage with Trump and reiterated her call for female sports to remain exclusive to biological female athletes.

“Pro-woman & pro-fairness is not anti-trans,” Gaines noted. “I truly can’t even believe this is a topic for debate. It’s simple. Women should not be forced to share a changing space & compete against males with biological advantages that will never be completely diminished regardless of hormones taken. If you’re delusional enough to think fairness for women is considered transphobic, you’re simply misogynistic.”
