Maryland shines tonight at Democratic Convention

MICHAEL EAVES, of Forest Hill, is a real estate agent and secretary of the Harford County Democratic Central Committee. Eaves was also a member of the Young Democrats of Maryland, and served as a staffer for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. This is his first convention. Eaves is pledged to Clinton.

JACK HUGHES, 50, of Salisbury, is a correctional officer. Hughes will represent the American Federation of State and Municipal Employees. Hughes is married with children. This is his first convention. Hughes is pledged to Clinton.

BARRIE TILGHMAN is the mayor of Salisbury, a post she has held since 1998. Before becoming mayor, Tilghman worked for various political campaigns and community organizations, such as the Salisbury Historic District Commission and the Salisbury School Board of Trustees. She is a pledged alternate delegate for Clinton.

RYAN EWING, 28, of Easton, is the field organizer for the Maryland League of Conservation Voters. Ewing also served as a town councilor in Brunswick, Maine. Ewing attended Western Maryland College and George Washington University. Ewing is married. This is his first convention. Ewing is pledged to Obama.

JOYCE FITZPATRICK, 69, of Grasonville, is retired. Fitzpatrick graduated from Penn State University. Fitzpatrick is married with three children. This will be her first convention. She is pledged to Obama.

Congressional District 2: Parts of Harford, Baltimore, and Anne Arundel counties, as well as small portions of the City of Baltimore

MARIETTA ENGLISH, 61, is the president of the Baltimore Teacher’s Union. She previously taught Baltimore public schools for more than 30 years. She entered politics as a volunteer for the campaigns of Maryland politicians including Tony Fulton, a late Maryland delegate, and Cummings, a congressman. English, who lives in Baltimore, is a pledged Clinton delegate.

DION GUTHRIE, 70, of Joppatowne, is a Harford County councilman. Among his degrees, Guthrie has a bachelor’s from McKendree School of Religion. Guthrie is married with six children. He is pledged to Clinton.

CHERYL GLENN, 57, of Baltimore, is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. Glenn is also a member of the Environmental Matters Committee and Women Legislators of Maryland. Glenn attended the Community College of Baltimore County and the National Labor College. She is married and has five children. Glenn is pledged to Obama.

KATHLEEN M. MILLER, 43, of Timonium, is the manager of a holistic wellness center. She began following Obama’s career after hearing his 2004 convention speech, and flew to Springfield, Ill., to be on hand when Obama announced his candidacy in February 2007. She is pledged to Obama.

ROBERT JOHNSON Jr., has a bachelor’s from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is a delegate pledged to Obama.

KWAME RICH, 36, is the owner of the Regeneration Project, an organization that provides mental health services and therapeutic mentoring to at-risk youths in Baltimore. Rich was an early Obama supporter and volunteered with the campaign in Maryland, as well as other states. He is a pledged alternate delegate for Obama.

Congressional District 3: Parts of Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties, as well as a significant part of the City of Baltimore

SANDRA HILLMAN, 67, of Baltimore, is the president of Sandy Hillman Communications. Hillman is married and has two children. This is her first convention. She is pledged to Clinton.

MAGGIE MCINTOSH, 60, represents Baltimore’s 43rd district in the Maryland House of Delegates, a post she first won in 1992. She previously taught in Baltimore’s public schools. She attended a convention as a delegate in 1980. McIntosh is pledged to Hillary Clinton.

JON LARIA, 42, of Baltimore, is a partner at the Ballard Spahr Andrews and Ingersoll law firm. Laria received degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the University Of Maryland School of Law. He is married and has one child. This is his first convention. Laria is pledged to Clinton.

LISA LOPEZ FRIEDMAN, 31, recently moved to Columbia from Wyoming and is a social worker at Baltimore’s Child Protective Services. She is an Air Force veteran who got excited about Obama after his 2004 convention speech. When her husband decided to run as a convention delegate, she joked that since she supported Obama first, she should have the honor. He told her to fill out the form, too. She won, and is now a delegate pledged to Obama. Her husband, though jealous, still plans to join her on the trip to Denver.

DANIEL CLEMENTS, 61, of Annapolis, is an attorney at Salsbury Clements Bekman Marder & Adkins, L.L.C. Clements also served as assistant U.S. Attorney for Maryland, as well as president of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association. Clements attended Pennsylvania State University and George Washington University Law School. This is his first convention. Clements is pledged to Obama.

DAVID MARKER, 51, is a statistician at Westat, a consulting company in Rockville. He lives in Columbia. Marker has served on the Howard County Central Committee and has volunteered for campaigns since George McGovern’s bid in 1972. Marker volunteered to help organize Obama’s Maryland campaign in January 2007. Now, he is a pledged delegate for Obama.

LYN FARROW, of Annapolis, is the manager of Resource Development at Maryland Mentoring Partnership. Farrow will be an alternate at this year’s convention and is pledged to Obama.

Congressional District 4: Parts of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties

ANGELA ALSOBROOKS, 37, is the executive director of the Prince George’s County Revenue Authority. She lives in Upper Marlboro. She became active in the Democratic Party as an intern for the district’s representative to Congress, Eleanor Holmes Norton. She worked on the Al Gore campaign in 2000. Alsobrooks is pledged to Clinton.

DARRELL A. MILLER, 44, is the first African-American man to be elected mayor of Capitol Heights. He began his first term in 2006. He served as a city councilman from 2002 to 2006, and has worked as a systems administrator at Howard University School of Law. He is a pledged delegate for Clinton.

RUSHERN L. BAKER, III, 49, of Cheverly, is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates and executive director of the Community Teachers Institute. Baker received his bachelor’s, as well as a law degree, from Howard University. Baker is married and has three children. He is pledged to Obama.

MICHAEL BUCKLEY, 39, of Silver Spring, is the communications director for both the AFL-CIO Alliance of Retired Americans, and Maryland for Obama. Buckley attended American University. This will be his first convention. Buckley is pledged to Obama.

NATHANIEL EXUM, 68, of Landover, is a Maryland State Senator and former member of the Maryland House of Delegates. Exum attended Howard University. He is married with children. This will be his third convention. Exum is pledged to Obama.

MARY JANE COOLEN, 47, of Cheverly, is a legislative aide in the Maryland General Assembly, and works both as a therapeutic riding instructor and as the Mid-Atlantic marketing manager for Vermont Mystic Pie Company. Coolen attended George Washington University. This will be her first convention. She is pledged to Obama.

JOLENE IVEY, 47, of Cheverly, is a Maryland State Delegate. Ivey received a bachelor’s from Towson University and a master’s from the University of Maryland. She is married with five children. Ivey is pledged to Obama.

KATINA ROJAS JOY, of Bowie, is a member of the National Latinas Caucus and attended the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. Rojas Joy is an alternate pledged to Obama.

Congressional District 5: All of Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert counties, as well as portions of Prince Georges and Anne Arundel counties

BENJAMIN BARNES, 33, is in his second year as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. His jurisdiction includes parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties. In addition to his political office, Barnes is a practicing attorney. He is pledged to Clinton.

VIRGINIA BENEDICT, 64, of Newburg, is a library assistant and chairwoman of the Charles County Democratic Central Committee. Benedict attended the Maryland School of Art in Baltimore, and spent several years at a community college. As chairman of the county’s Democratic Central Committee, Benedict served as Charles coordinator for Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign, and helped generate grassroots support for her before Maryland’s primary election. She has three children. Benedict was a delegate in 2000 and attended the 1992 and 1996 conventions. She is pledged to Clinton.

SUE KULLEN, 48, is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing Calvert County. In addition to her elected office, she has worked as an advocate for the disabled and as a consultant for organizations that serve them, including a 12 year stretch as a manager and director of Arc of Southern Maryland. She is pledged to Obama.

ROXANNE TAYLOR, 51, is CEO of Church Insurance Partnership Agency and lives in Bowie. She’s been in insurance for 28 years, but the 2008 convention is her first foray into politics. After hearing Obama deliver his speech at the 2004 convention, she became an early devotee, joining a local campaign organization during the early stage of Obama’s candidacy. She is pledged to Obama.

MARK COOK, 45, of College Park, is a College Park Councilmember. Cook organized a field canvass for Sen. Obama in Prince George’s County before the primary election. Cook also runs a phone bank focusing on voter identification and volunteer recruitment in Virginia, as well as a Kids For Obama Poster Workshop. This is his first convention. Cook is pledged to Obama.

JUSTIN ROSS, 32, was born in Bowie and has lived in Prince George’s county his entire life, including his college years, which he spent studying government at the University of Maryland. He is a real estate broker and a Maryland State Delegate for Prince George’s County’s 22nd district. Ross is pledged to Obama.

LEN LUCCHI, 50, of Bowie, is a partner at O’Malley Niles Nylen and Gilmore, P.A. Lucchi is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland School of Law. Lucchi has attended seven previous national conventions. This will be his second time serving as a delegate at a national convention. Lucchi is an alternate pledged to Obama.

Congressional District 6: All of Garrett, Allegany, Washington, Frederick and Carroll counties, as well as portions of Montgomery, Baltimore and Harford counties

SUE HECHT, 60, of Frederick, is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. Hecht was the former director of the Heartly House Community Foundation Fund, and also served for two years as president of the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence. Hecht attended Frostburg University, Hood College and Frederick Community College. She is married with two children. Hecht is pledged to Clinton.

JOHN P. DONOGHUE, 51, of Hagerstown, is a member of the state House of Delegates, representing District 2C. He was first elected in 1991 and is serving his fifth term. Donoghue previously worked as a financial adviser at Legg Mason and as president of the Washington County unit of the American Cancer Society. A graduate of Catholic University of America, he is married and has four children. Donoghue is pledged to Clinton.

JAMES BESTPITCH, 57, of Cumberland, is president of the Western Maryland Central Labor Council. He attended Anne Arundel Community College. Bestpitch is married with children. Bestpitch is pledged to Clinton and this will be his first convention.

ANN-MARIE LUCIANO, 32, of Monrovia, is a lawyer at Dickstein Shapiro, LLP. Luciano received degrees from Alleghany College and Cornell Law Schol. She is married. This will be her first convention. Luciano is pledged to Obama.

GOODLOE E. BYRON, JR., 54, of Middletown, is founder and president of Potomac Investment Services. He is the son of Goodloe and Beverly Byron, both of whom served in the U.S. House of Representatives. Byron is pledged to Obama.

Congressional District 7: Parts of Baltimore City as well as Baltimore and Howard counties

CATHERINE E. PUGH, 58, is a Maryland State Senator from Baltimore. She joined the Senate in 2007 after a term in the House of Delegates. She was previously a Baltimore councilwoman, and is the CEO of the public relations firm, CE Pugh and Company. She is pledged to Clinton.

BERNARD YOUNG, 54, is a Baltimore councilman. He joined the council in 1996 after cutting his political teeth in the earlier campaigns of fellow local politicians. Young manages a customer service division for Maryland’s Department of Human Resources. He is pledged to Clinton.

LISA GLADDEN, 43, is the majority whip in the Maryland State Senate. She represents Baltimore and joined the Senate in 2003. She previously served in the House of Delegates, and is a lawyer in Baltimore’s Office of the Public Defender. She was a delegate at the 2004 convention. Gladden is pledged to Obama.

VERNA L. JONES, 52, is a Maryland State Senator from Baltimore. She has been a member since 2003. Before joining the Senate, she was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1999. She is the founder and president of Community Building Network, which helps organize neighborhood associations and community groups. Jones is pledged to Obama.

NATHANIEL MCFADDEN, 62, is a Maryland state senator from Baltimore. Before he was elected to the senate in 1995, McFadden was a high school teacher, school principal, and community activist. He also served on Baltimore’s City Council from 1982 to 1987. McFadden is pledged to Barack Obama.

KEIFFER MITCHELL, 40, is a banker at Wachovia and the nephew of Parren Mitchell, Maryland’s first black congressman, who died in 2007. The younger Mitchell entered politics in 1995 as a Baltimore councilman, where he served until 2007, when he left the council in an unsuccessful bid for the mayor’s

office. He is pledged to Obama.

STEPHANIE FARQUHAR, 27, of Baltimore, is a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This will be her first convention. Farquhar is an alternate pledged to Obama.

Congressional District 8: Large part of Montgomery County and a small portion of Prince George’s County

MARY BOERGERS, 62, of Chevy Chase, is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates and a former state senator. Boergers received a bachelor’s from the College of St. Catherine and a master’s from Catholic University of America. She is married and has two children. This is her third convention. Boergers is pledged to Clinton.

NANCY FLOREEN, 56, of Garrett Park, is a Montgomery County councilwoman. Floreen is also on the board of directors of the Jewish Council on Aging, Habitat for Humanity and the Strathmore Hall Foundation, and serves as treasurer of Maryland’s County Elected Women organization. Floreen attended Smith College and Rutgers University. She is married with three children. Floreen is pledged to Clinton.

JOHN K. DELANEY, 45, of Chevy Chase, is the co-founder, chairman and CEO of CapitalSource Inc. Delaney received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Delaney is married and has four children. Delaney is pledged to Clinton.

BRIAN FELDMAN, 47, of Potomac, is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. He also serves on the board of directors of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and The Dwelling Place, an organization that provides transitional housing for homeless families. Feldman attended Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and Johns Hopkins University. He is married with two children. Feldman is pledged to Obama.

STEWART BAINUM, JR., 62, of Chevy Chase, is the chairman of the board at Choice Hotels International Inc. Bainum is also a former state senator and former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, as well as the former CEO and chairman of Manor Care, Inc. Bainum received a bachelor’s degree from Pacific Union College, an M.B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a theology degree from Andrews University. This will be his second convention as a delegate. Bainum is pledged to Obama.

ROSIE ENGMAN, 69, is a retired school teacher who lives in Silver Spring. Engman’s teaching career included working in schools in Montgomery County and Fairfax, as well as stints in Athens Greece and India. She volunteered in John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign while still in college, but didn’t become active in politics again until 2002. She joined Obama’s campaign in April 2007 and will attend her first convention this year as a pledged Obama delegate.

LYNN NOVELLI, 59, of Gaithersburg, is the fundraiser for the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad, a volunteer fire and rescue organization. She got into politics early and was the president of San Francisco’s Young Democrats in 1972. Novelli was an early supporter of Obama, and her husband, Michael Novelli, is an Obama campaign director for Maryland. She is pledged to Obama.

JAMIE RASKIN, 45, is a Maryland State Senator for Silver Spring and Takoma Park. When he’s not in Annapolis, he teaches law at American University. Raskin joined Maryland’s Senate in 2007. He was previously a delegate in the 2004 convention. Like Obama, to whom he is pledged as an alternate in this year’s nominating contest, Raskin is a graduate of Harvard’s law school and a former editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Add-on delegates, party leaders and super delegates

CURT ANDERSON, 58, of Baltimore, has been a member of the House of Delegates since 1983. He was previously a broadcast journalist at WBAL-TV and WMAR-TV in Baltimore. Anderson is a graduate of Morgan State University and the University of Baltimore School of Law. He has four children. Anderson is pledged to Obama.

JEAN BAILEY, 63, of Silver Spring, is a graduate professor at Howard University and member of Maryland Women for Obama. She is director of the Center for Drug Abuse Research at Howard and is a founding member of the board of directors of the National African American Drug Policy Coalition. Bailey is pledged to Obama.

IDA BAILEY-JONES, of Baltimore, is an executive board member for Local 1535 of the American Federation of State and County Municipal Employees-Maryland in Baltimore’s District 2. She serves on AFSCME’s National Women’s Advisory Committee and participates actively in international conferences as well as in local rallies, forums and lobbying efforts in Annapolis. She is an at-large add-on delegate pledged to Clinton.

ANTHONY BROWN, 46, of Mitchellville, is Maryland’s lieutenant governor, a captain in the U.S. Army and currently the highest-ranking elected official who has served a tour of duty in Iraq. He served a 10-month tour in 2004 with the Multi-National Force-Iraq, working with military and civilian officials to deliver humanitarian aid. In 2007, he was promoted to colonel and currently commands the 153rd Legal Support Organization in Pennsylvania. He is chairman of the governor’s Military Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). He was a member of Maryland’s House of Delegates from 1999-2007, serving as majority whip for the last three years of his term. He has a law degree from Harvard University, is married and has two children. He is pledged to Clinton. Brown was forced to leave the  convention on Monday and return home following a death in his family.

BENJAMIN CARDIN, 64, is a U.S. senator for Maryland. He took office in 2007, after serving nearly 20 years as a Maryland congressman. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1967, and won a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates the same year. His legislative focuses are health care and retirement security. As a U.S. senator, Cardin is an unpledged super-delegate, but he endorsed Obama in June.

ALVARO CIFUENTES is an attorney who lives in Potomac. He was the chair of the Democratic National Committee Hispanic Caucus from 2001 to 2007. Cifuentes, a super delegate, has endorsed Clinton.

MARIA CORDONE, 58, is the director of community services at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, an international union. Among others, her union represents more than 300,000 American retirees. Cordone represents those retired workers from her post as executive vice-chair of the DNC Seniors Coordinating Council. This will be Cordone’s third convention as an unpledged super delegate.

MICHAEL CRYOR, 62, is Maryland’s Democratic Party chairman. His company, The Cryor Group, consults on strategic communication and urban policy issues. Before forming the company, he was an executive at Susan Davis International, a lobbying firm in Washington. Cryor is the chairman of Maryland’s delegation to Denver and is an unpledged super delegate.

ELIJAH CUMMINGS, 57, of Baltimore, is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 7th District. He was first elected in 1996 and is serving his sixth term. A graduate of Howard University and the University of Maryland School of Law, he previously served in the state House of Delegates from 1983-1996 and worked as a practicing attorney. Cummings is pledged to Obama.

WAYNE CURRY, 57, of Upper Marlboro was Prince George’s County executive from 1994-2002. Former Gov. Robert Ehrlich appointed Curry to the Maryland Port Commission in 2003, where he served until 2006. An attorney, he holds a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) and a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. He is married and has two children. This is his third convention, and he is an at-large delegate pledged to Clinton.

SHEILA DIXON, 54, of Baltimore, became the city’s mayor in 2007. She served 20 years on the Baltimore City Council, as president from 1999-2007. Three times voted one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women,” she was an international trade specialist with the Maryland State Department of Business and Economic Development for 17 years. A Baltimore Public Schools graduate, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Towson University and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. She taught elementary school and was an adult training specialist in the Baltimore Public Schools. She lives in Baltimore with her two children. This is her third convention.

DONNA EDWARDS, 50, of Fort Washington, is a Congresswoman representing the 4th district of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives. She won a special election in June, and is the first African-American woman to hold this office in Maryland. She was previously the executive director of the Arca Foundation in Washington and the co-founder and executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence. She also worked on campaign finance reform issues as a lobbyist for Public Citizen and the Center for a New Democracy. Edwards received a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and a law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center. She is an unpledged delegate, and this is her third convention.

PETER FRANCHOT, 60, of Takoma Park, became Maryland’s State Comptroller in 2006. A delegate in the Maryland General Assembly for District 20 (Silver Spring and Takoma Park ) from 1987-2007, he served as chairman of the Transportation and Environment Subcommittees and as a member of the Appropriations Committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College and a law degree from Northeastern University. He is a member of the NAACP and the Long Branch-Sligo Citizens’ Association. He has been a Takoma Park youth soccer coach since 1986. He is married to Anne Maher and has two children. He is pledged to Obama.

JOHN GAGE, 62, is national president of the American Federation of Government Employees. He was elected AFGE president in 2003. In 1974, Gage began work as a disability examiner for the Social Security Administration and became active with the AFGE. A graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, he played two years in the Baltimore Orioles’ organization. He is married to Patti McGowan, an AFGE labor lawyer. Gage is pledged to Obama.

DOUGLAS GANSLER, 45, became Maryland’s attorney general in 2006 after eight years as Montgomery County’s chief prosecutor and six as an assistant United States attorney. He is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law, and a member of the Bar Association in Maryland and Washington. He is a member of the Montgomery County Commission on Aging and co-chair of the NAACP Criminal Justice Committee He lives in Montgomery County with his wife and two children. He is pledged to Obama. This is his first convention.

PARRIS GLENDENING, 66, served two terms as Maryland governor from 1995-2003. He is now the president of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute, an environmental research organization. He was the Prince George’s County executive from 1982-1994 and prior to that served on the Prince George’s County Council for eight years. He was an associate professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland from 1972-1994. He is married to Jennifer Crawford and has two children. He is an unpledged, add-on delegate, and has been a delegate to every Democratic convention since 1988.

LAUREN GLOVER, of Mitchellville, is a civic leader and vice chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. Glover is a principal for LDG Consulting Services, a project management firm. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and is married with two sons. Glover is pledged to Obama.

JANICE GRIFFIN, 59, of Silver Spring, is president of Griffin & Associates, a political consulting firm. She will serve on the Credentials Committee at the convention. A graduate of Northwestern University, she served on the White House Fellowships Committee during the Clinton Administration and was previously vice president of government relations for Prudential Financial. Griffin is pledged to Obama.

JOSEPH HANSEN, 65, of Rockville, is International President of the United Food and Commercial Worker’s International Union and President of Union Network International, a global union with 15 million workers in 120 countries. He is a founding member of the Change to Win Federation, a coalition of seven unions representing six million workers. He will be attending his second convention as a delegate pledged-at-large to Obama.

HELEN HOLTON, 48, of Baltimore, represents the city’s 8th district on the Baltimore City Council. Elected in 1995, she is the chair of the Taxation, Finance and Economic Development Committee. A certified public accountant, she received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Baltimore, an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and master’s degrees in theology and urban ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary and University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Baltimore City League of Women Voters, and the Greater West Hills Community Association. She is an ordained minister and an active member of Payne Memorial AME Church in West Baltimore. She is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Obama.

CAROLYN J.B. HOWARD, 69, of Mitchellville, represents Prince George’s County’s Sixth District in the Maryland House of Delegates. She is deputy speaker pro tem and a member of the Legislative Policy Committee and Joint Committee on the Management of Public Funds. She was the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus chairwoman and House deputy majority whip. Howard has a degree from Florida A&M University. A former Prince George’s County Public Schools principal, she is a member of the Maryland State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She was also a member of the Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee from 1982-1988. She is married and has three children. This will be her fifth convention, and she is pledged to Clinton.

STENY HOYER, 69, of Mechanicsville, is majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 5th District. He was first elected in 1981 and is serving his 14th term. Hoyer is a graduate of the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center. He has three children. Hoyer is pledged to Obama.

JACK JOHNSON, 59, of Mitchellville, began his second term as Prince George’s County Executive in December 2006. He previously served as State’s Attorney and Deputy State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, a tax professor at North Carolina Central University School of Law and a senior attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel with the Internal Revenue Service. A South Carolina native, he earned a degree in business administration from Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., and a law degree from Howard University. He is married and has three children and one grandson. He is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Clinton.

LORRETTA JOHNSON, 69, of Baltimore, has been president of the  paraprofessional chapter of the Baltimore Teachers Union since 1978. This year she became the executive vice president of the American Federation of Teachers. She is recording secretary of the Baltimore AFL-CIO; and vice president of the Maryland State and D.C. AFL-CIO. She began her career as a teacher’s aide in a Baltimore elementary school in 1966, and negotiated the first paraprofessional union contract four years later. She received an honorary doctorate from Coppin State University in 2006. She and her late husband Leonard have three children and seven grandchildren. Johnson is a delegate at large, pledged to Clinton. This is her fifth convention as a delegate and the ninth she has attended – more than any other Maryland delegate.

ADRIENNE JONES, 53, of Woodstock, represents Baltimore’s District 10 in the Maryland House of Delegates where she is the Speaker Pro Tem and House Chair of the Joint Committee on Fair Practices. She has 24 years of service in Baltimore County government, serving as the director of the Office of Fair Practices and Community Affairs since 1994. She is a member of the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she received the Outstanding Alumna award in 2003. She is married and has two sons. She is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Clinton.

NANCY K. KOPP, 64, of Bethesda, is state treasurer. Prior to her election in 2002, she represented the 16th District in the state House of Delegates from 1974-2002. She has a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College and a master’s from the University of Chicago. She is married and has two children. Kopp is pledged to Clinton.

SUSAN LEE, 54, of Bethesda, has represented Montgomery County in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2002. She is Deputy Majority Whip and 1st Vice President of Women Legislators of Maryland. She was previously an attorney for the U.S. Commission on Human Rights and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Born in Texas, she has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, and a law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law. She is married. This will be her third convention, and she is pledged to Clinton.

BELKIS “BEL” LEONG-HONG, 60, of Gaithersburg, is a former Department of Defense deputy assistant secretary and founder and president of Knowledge Advantage Inc., a company specializing in business management and consulting. Leong-Hong worked nearly 30 years for the government before retiring in 1999. She is trained in mathematics and computer science and has degrees from American University and Hunter College. Leong-Hong is pledged to Obama.

MARCIA MASSEY, of Silver Spring, is a Democratic Party activist in Montgomery County. A long-time Montgomery County educator, she was a school liaison to the PTA board for several years and the school staff representative to the teacher’s union. Massey traveled to Iowa and Pennsylvania to campaign for Clinton, to whom she is pledged.

PENNY MCCRIMMON, of Randallstown is a Baltimore native, longtime Maryland political activist and a member of the Democratic State Central Committee in her second term. Formerly the Small Business Enterprise Coordinator at the Maryland Department of Transportation, she is the Baltimore County Maryland Coordinator for the Obama campaign and president of Maryland Women for Responsive Government. She received a bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California film school. She has one son. She is an at-large delegate pledged to Obama.

RICHARD MICHALSKI, of Upper Marlboro, is general vice president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. A former welder for General Electric, he first served as a delegate at the 1980 Democratic National Convention. Michalski is pledged to Clinton.

GLENARD S. MIDDLETON, SR., 59, of Baltimore, is a vice president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and president of Maryland Public Employees, Local 44. He is married to Sharon Green Middleton, a Baltimore councilwoman with whom he has one son. Middleton is pledged to Clinton.

BARBARA MIKULSKI, 72, of Baltimore, is a member of the U.S. Senate. She was first elected in 1986 and is serving her fourth term. She was elected to the Baltimore City Council in 1971 and the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976. A Baltimore native, she graduated from Mount St. Agnes College and worked as a social worker and community activist. Mikulski is pledged to Obama.

CHERYL MILLER, of Annapolis, coordinates the Anne Arundel County Volunteers for Obama office in Severna Park, a commercial space she and her husband donated. They have expanded its operations in support of other party candidates. Miller is a real estate entrepreneur, a political activist, and a part-time event planner with a degree from Lycoming College. She is a mother of two. She is an at-large delegate pledged to Obama.

HEATHER MIZEUR, 35, of Takoma Park, is a member of the state House of Delegates, representing the 20th District. She was elected in 2006 and is serving her first term. She was director of domestic policy for U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts from 2003-2006. She attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and lives with her domestic partner, Deborah. Mizeur is pledged to Obama.

ELLIS MOTTUR, 78, of North Bethesda, is the oldest member of the Maryland delegation. He was the Assistant Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton. This is his first convention, and he is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Clinton.

MARY JO NEVILLE, 50, of Dayton, is a lobbyist for the Maryland State Teachers Association and a former state Democratic vice chair. She is a Baltimore native and graduate of the University of Baltimore. Neville is pledged to Obama.

MARTIN O’MALLEY, 45, of Annapolis, is governor of Maryland. Elected in 2006, he is serving his first term. He was mayor of Baltimore from 1999-2007. He served on the Baltimore city council from 1991-1999 and was an assistant state’s attorney from 1988-1991. He is married to Catherine Curran O’Malley, a state district judge with whom he has four children. O’Malley is pledged to Obama.

GREGORY PECORARO, 49, of Westminster, is a longtime member of the Westminster City Council. He previously served as assistant secretary of the state Department of Transportation. He is married and has one daughter. Pecoraro is pledged to Obama.

CAROL PENSKY, 62, of Washington, is a member of the Democratic National Committee and founder of the DNC’s Women Leadership Forum. She was DNC treasurer from 1997-1999 and finance chairwoman in 2000. Pensky is pledged to Clinton.

JOAN PITKIN, 76, of Bowie, represented Prince George’s County’s District 23 in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1979-2002. This is her first convention. She holds degrees from the University of Vermont and Columbia University. She co-founded the Belair Co-op Nursery and is a member of the League of Women Voters, Soroptimists International, the Bowie Civic Association and the Maryland Order of Women Legislators. She is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Obama.

KARREN POPE-ONWUKWE, 55, of Hyattsville, is an attorney and member of Maryland Women for Obama. She owns a private practice specializing in elder law and is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, University of Maryland University College and Georgetown University Law Center. She has one son. Pope-Onwukwe is pledged to Obama.

JULIE RANDALL, of Lexington Park, is a member of the St. Mary’s County Democratic Central Committee, and the chair of the St. Mary’s County Commission on Disabilities. She is the former president of the St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners and chair of St. Mary’s County School Board. She was a senior manager for 25 years at Wyle, a national defense contractor. She is married with three daughters. She is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Obama.

DUTCH RUPPERSBERGER, 62, of Cockeysville, is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 2nd District. He was first elected in 2002 and is serving his third term. He previously served as Baltimore County executive from 1994-2002. Ruppersberger is pledged to Obama.

JOHN SARBANES, 47, of Towson, is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 3rd District. He was first elected in 2006 and is serving his first term. He previously practiced law and served as a special assistant to the State Superintendent of Schools. Sarbanes is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard University School of Law. He is the son of former Maryland Sen. Paul Sarbanes, is married and has three children. Sarbanes is pledged to Obama.

ELLY SHAW-BELBLIDIA, of Gaithersburg, is a Montgomery County political activist who serves on the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee. Living in Maryland after stints overseas in Algeria and Switzerland, she works at a community hospital as a clinical nutritionist. She is married and has two daughters. She is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Obama.

DANA VICKERS SHELLEY, 50, of Pikesville, is the director of Strategic Communications for the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore. A staff member in the Clinton Administration, she has attended six conventions in some capacity, but this is her first time as a delegate. She is an at-large, add-on delegate pledged to Obama.

MICHAEL STEED, 59, of Chevy Chase, is founder and managing partner of Paladin Capital Group, a private equity investment firm. He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University and Loyola University School of Law and serves on the university’s Board of Trustees. He is married and has three sons. Steed is pledged to Clinton.

JOHN SWEENEY, 74, of Bethesda, is president of the AFL-CIO. A vice president since 1980, he was elected president of the labor organization in 1995. A graduate of Iona College, he is the former president of the Service Employees International Union.

JEN TERRASA, 39, of Columbia, is in her first term on the Howard County Council, representing District 3, including two Columbia villages, Savage  and North Laurel. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a law degree from the University of Baltimore. She has three children. This is her first convention, and she is pledged to Obama.

KATHLEEN KENNEDY TOWNSEND, 57, of Baltimore, was lieutenant governor of Maryland from 1995-2003 and unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2002. Townsend was a U.S. deputy assistant attorney general from 1993-1994 and was the founder and executive director of the Maryland Student Service Alliance from 1987-1993. She graduated from Harvard University in 1974 and received a law degree from the University of New Mexico in 1978. She is the daughter of Robert F. and Ethel Kennedy. Townsend is pledged to Clinton.

SUSAN TURNBULL, 55, of Bethesda, is vice chair of the Democratic National Committee and a community activist. A longtime DNC member, Turnbull is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, the University of Maryland and Marymount University. She is married and has two sons.

KEN ULMAN, 34, of Columbia, was elected Howard County executive in 2006, and is the youngest person to hold this post in any Maryland county. He was a member of the Howard County Council from 2002-2006. A Columbia native, he received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He is married and has two daughters. He is pledged to Obama.

CHRIS VAN HOLLEN, 49, of Kensington, is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland’s 8th District. He was first elected in 2002 and is serving his third term. Van Hollen previously served 12 years in the Maryland General Assembly. He is a graduate of Swarthmore College, Harvard University and Georgetown University Law Center. He is married and has three children. He is pledged to Obama.

JASON WASKEY, 26, of Rockville, is co-campaign director for Maryland for Obama. He is the Condominiums and Trademarks Officer for the Maryland Secretary of State. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. This is his first convention, and he is pledged to Obama.

ROBERT YOCHEM, 40, of Baltimore, is a stem cell research specialist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Baltimore City Regional Field Director and Out-of-State Coordinator for the Committee of Obama for Maryland, he traveled to nearly 20 states and organized larger group trips throughout the primary season. This is his first convention, and he is pledged to Obama.
