When I was first saw the San Antonio newspaper was reporting Nino Scalia’s death, I fervently hoped it wasn’t true. But then there were other reports, and emails from friends, and hope was replaced by shock, and by grief.
What a man! An exemplary public official, an enlightened patriot, a wonderful husband and father, a good and loyal friend. And, if I may say, what a character. No one who was there when he spent an hour and a half with us at The Weekly Standard about seven years ago will forget his amazing and entirely unforced combination of brilliantly acerbic wit and genuine good nature.
“There were giants in the earth in those days.” Now, hard as it is to believe, Nino Scalia is gone.
