Italy announced Friday that 627 more people had died from the coronavirus, the biggest day-to-day increase in deaths for the country.
Italy has more than 41,000 confirmed cases of the virus as of Friday morning, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker. Of those cases, more than 3,400 have died and nearly 4,500 have recovered.
The Italian government instructed the military to enforce a lockdown in the worst-hit region of the country after the number of deaths in the European nation surpassed the death toll in China, which was previously the deadliest region of the coronavirus outbreak.
“Unfortunately, we are not seeing a change of trend in the numbers, which are rising,” said Attilio Fontana, the president of Lombardy.
