Virginia student arrested after bringing gun to elementary school: Police

After conducting an investigation, police said they discovered that a male student had been in possession of the firearm.

Police arrested the male student, who has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile, according to the police statement.

Cpl. Ernest Williams confirmed to the Washington Examiner that once officers had received the information, they worked “swiftly” to isolate and secure the student and the weapon. Williams added that the school “never had to go on lockdown” and “no one else was ever in threat or danger.”

Burbank Elementary School issued a statement to parents confirming the incident had happened and asking them to speak to their children regarding “suspicious or strange” behavior they come across, 13 News Now reported.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority and we will continue to take the appropriate measures to ensure our schools are safe,” Burbank Elementary said in the statement, according to the outlet. “We appreciate the partnership with our families to create and maintain the level of safety that we want for our school and we are continuing our day of teaching and learning at Burbank.”

Burbank Elementary School told parents that the male student was taken out of school following the incident and was being “disciplined” in accordance with the school’s student handbook, the outlet reported.
