Former Secretary of State John Kerry blasted President Trump Saturday for his speech in front of the United Nations earlier this week, calling him “a joke to the world.”
Calling his speech a “disturbing example” of Trump’s “embarrassing remarks on the world stage” in a fundraising email sent by the Democratic National Committee, the former Massachusetts senator pointed to the laughter that met part of Trump’s speech.
“Trump has long argued that the United States needs a president ‘who isn’t a laughing-stock to the entire world’ — and his speech at the United Nations demonstrated that under his leadership, that’s now true,” Kerry wrote.
During Trump’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, the president got what he called an unexpected laugh from the crowd as he discussed his administration’s accomplishments.
U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said Wednesday that U.N. attendees, unused to the level of honesty Trump displayed, were taken aback by his comments.
“When he said that, they loved how honest he is, and it’s not diplomatic, and they find it funny,” Haley said.
Trump also said Wednesday that world leaders were laughing with him, not at him.
Mirroring a DNC fundraising email written by former President Barack Obama on Saturday morning, Kerry asked contributors to kick in $3, $10, $25, $50, $100, or another amount ahead of the last quarterly fundraising deadline before the 2018 midterm elections.
