McDonnell sets date for special elections

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell scheduled two special elections for Jan. 11 to fill the seats of state Sen. Robert Hurt and state Del. Morgan Griffith, who were elected to Congress on Nov. 2.

The State Board of Elections meets Nov. 22 to certify the election results, and Hurt and Griffith are then expected to resign their seats in the General Assembly.

Anyone interested in running in the special elections has until noon on Nov. 24 to file as a candidate.

Hurt, a Republican, ousted freshman Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello in the state’s 5th Congressional District race and Griffith, Majority Leader of the House of Delegates, beat longtime Democratic Rep. Rick Boucher in Virginia’s 9th District.

The General Assembly’s session begins Jan. 12.
