Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko likened President Trump to Ronald Reagan when expressing confidence in his ability to bring peace to Ukraine.
“I am absolutely confident that when President Trump, the real leader, the very charismatic person, can help me to bring peace to my land the same way like Reagan [brought] victory on the Cold War without a single shot,” Poroshenko said on Fox News.
Poroshenko met with Trump at the White House on Tuesday and told reporters that they made “a lot of progress.”
Poroshenko was elected president in 2014 following the Ukrainian revolution and has sought deeper ties with the European Union and says he’s concerned about Russia’s continued military presence in the region.
Poroshenko said that three years ago to the day he declared a cease-fire for ten days, waiting until Russia would stop killing Ukraine’s soldiers and civilians. “Unfortunately we didn’t deliver any results,” he added.
The Trump administration has made overtures to improve U.S.-Russian relations, but that may have been put in jeopardy this week with the shooting down a bomber from the Assad regime, which is allied with Russia.
