Poll: Hillary 49, Trump 37

A new poll of likely voters in the general election gives Democrat Hillary Clinton a 12-point lead over Republican Donald Trump. The survey from Bloomberg found Clinton with 49 percent support to Trump’s 37 percent. Libertarian Gary Johnson receives nine percent, while four percent say they “aren’t sure.”

The poll of 750 was conducted between June 10 and June 13, so only the last day of polling took place after the terrorist attack in Orlando that killed 49 people and injured many more. Among the 408 respondents who were asked on June 13 which candidate they would have “more confidence” in to deal with an Orlando-like crisis, 45 percent said selected Trump while 41 percent selected Clinton. Trump also edged out Clinton among all respondents, 50 percent to 45 percent, on the question of which candidate “would combat terrorist threats at home and abroad.”

Still, a majority of those polled—55 percent—said they would “never” vote for Trump for president. By comparison, just 43 percent said that of Clinton. Here’s more from Bloomberg:

Other troubling findings for Trump in poll include how 63 percent of women say they could never vote for him. “If you can never get the vote of two in three women, who are a majority of voters, that is something that has to change for Trump to emerge victorious,” Selzer said. Similar proportions of those younger than 35 and those with incomes of less than $50,000 also say they could never support him.

The Bloomberg poll shows a much wider race than two other recent polls, which showed Trump and Clinton within single digits and hovering around 40 percent support. Both of those polls were conducted before the Orlando attack.
