British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved into the intensive care unit after being hospitalized following his coronavirus diagnosis.
Johnson was admitted to St. Thomas’ Hospital on Sunday after showing persistent symptoms of the virus, including a high fever, nearly two weeks after he was initially diagnosed. He received an oxygen treatment shortly after he arrived.
The prime minister was moved to the ICU on Monday.
“Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital,” a spokesperson for Downing Street said in a statement.
Before the virus accelerated in the United Kingdom and Johnson fell ill, he quipped that he shook hands with “everybody” during a hospital visit with coronavirus patients. He later placed the U.K. on lockdown to halt the spread.
