Bill Clinton announces relaunch of global initiative amid war in Ukraine

Former President Bill Clinton announced Friday the reactivation of the Clinton Global Initiative after a period of hibernation, citing climate change and the war in Ukraine.

“The need for that kind of cooperation and coordination has never been more urgent than it is now,” Clinton wrote in a letter.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has ripped the cover off of longstanding inequities and vulnerabilities across our global community,” he added. “The existential threat of climate change grows every day. Democracy is under assault around the world, most glaringly in Ukraine where Russia has launched an unjustified and unprovoked invasion that has put millions of lives in grave danger.”

The CGI is a branch of the Clinton Foundation that consists of “a community of doers from across a broad section of society” attempting to solve the “world’s most pressing challenges.” It comprises 3,700 projects and international partnerships.

“The number of displaced people and refugees worldwide is higher than it has ever been — more than one in 95 of all people alive on the planet today has been forced to flee their home,” the former president added.

The CGI’s next meeting, which will be its first since 2017, will be held in New York on Sept. 19. The initiative was created in 2005.

Of the aforementioned global vulnerabilities, Clinton said, “I still believe we can accomplish far more together than we can apart.”
