Sen. Ron Johnson speaks out about handling of Hunter Biden controversy

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) spoke out against how investigations into Hunter Biden’s laptop and the classified documents found at President Joe Biden’s home have been handled, saying that “if there’s evidence of wrongdoing” the matters should be referred to Justice Department.

Johnson also discussed the Justice Department’s appointment of a special counsel to the Biden documents on NBC’s “Meet the Press” with Chuck Todd on Sunday. Johnson said that he is “not a fan” of special counsels but he did join his Republican colleagues in calling for one for the investigation of Hunter Biden.

“If there’s evidence of wrongdoing, then we should refer that the Justice Department then the investigation should take place,” Johnson said. “What happens nowadays, is the investigation begins, Congress never gets access to the information, and as a result, the American public never understands the truth of these situations. And so again, we just do these, these investigations in the political realm with wrongdoing completely backwards.”

Todd, however, found Johnson’s stances to be hypocritical, as there was never as intense of a demand for an investigation into Donald Trump’s son in law, Jared Kushner, as Republicans are now asking for Hunter Biden.

“Are you not concerned about that? And I say that because it seems to me if you’re concerned about what Hunter Biden did, you should be equally outraged about what Jared Kushner did,” Todd said.

Johnson countered Todd’s claim that he was targeting individuals for political damage.

“No, Chuck, because a lot of political wrongdoing does not necessarily result in a crime,” Johnson said. “But it’s still wrong and the public needs to understand exactly what happened.”

He referred to the FBI censorship of Twitter when it came to stories on the Hunter Biden laptop, which has been the focal point for Republicans believing Biden’s son was engaging in improper business deals with foreign entities, and therefore influencing American policy.

“Sir, do you have a crime that you think Hunter Biden committed? Because I’ve yet to see anybody explain,” Todd said. “It is not a crime to make money off your last name.”

Johnson deflecting answering whether he was worried about Kushner’s dealings, instead citing media bias as reasons for what “frustrates conservatives about the media.”

Contention over the hypocrisy between investigations into Trump and the Bidens has risen dramatically since the discovery of three troves of classified documents across President Biden’s home and the Penn-Biden Center. Previously, the president called Trump’s handling of 300 classified documents at Mar-a-Lago as “careless” and a risk to national security.
