Search underway for man who shot Arizona officer

A manhunt continued Friday for a shooter that injured an officer in Phoenix.

Nicholas Cowan, 35, shot a female Phoenix police officer at a gas station Thursday, resulting in her hospitalization.

By 11 p.m. that night, she was reported to be in stable condition, although she needed surgery to remove the bullet. The officer was called to the scene by a woman claiming to be Cowan’s girlfriend, who told a dispatcher he had committed crimes and was suicidal.

The anonymous girlfriend escaped to the gas station “to avoid a confrontation with her boyfriend,” police said. She then spoke with officers who responded to a domestic violence call at the station. When the female officer approached Cowan, he fired at her, and another officer reportedly returned fire.

Cowan fled the scene in a Toyota Prius after wounding the officer, but it was later recovered unoccupied. He is still at large, and police are discouraging people from approaching him, as he is considered “armed and dangerous.”

“Let’s find this guy,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams tweeted Friday.
