Police shootings already match 2006

With another week left in June, Baltimore police already have matched their number of fatal shootings for all of last year.

On Wednesday, an officer shot and killed a man whom police say pulled a gun ? the fifth fatal police-involved shooting this year. City police also shot and killed five people last year.

The shooting comes at a time of spiking violence in Baltimore ? with police reporting 148 homicides through Thursday, compared with 128 this time last year.

The latest police shooting occurred at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday while two officers worked in plain clothes on the 2800 block of Preston Street. They observed three suspects ? one with a gun ? and attempted to investigate, police spokesman Officer Troy Harris said.

The suspects began to run, and the officers pursued them, splitting up around the 2800 block of East Hoffman Street, he said.

One suspect, Devine Moore, 23, of the 300 block of East Monument Street, turned and pointed a gun at an officer, who told him multiple times to drop the weapon before firing, Harris said. Moore dropped his gun after being struck and killed by multiple bullets, Harris said.

Police were able to catch another suspect ? whose name was not released ? by following him in a helicopter, Harris said.

The third suspect is still at large, police said.
