Two Americans are dead and three more have been wounded after an attack on a coalition base in Kabul, Afghanistan, according to a U.S. military statement Wednesday morning.
Those killed were a U.S. service member and a Defense Department civilian employee, and the wounded were two civilians and one service member, the release said. The people who were wounded are in stable condition.
The Wednesday attack on the base was made by an “unknown assailant,” the release said, and that person was later killed.
A senior defense official called it an “inside the wire” attack at Camp Morehead, which is north of Kabul. The attacker is believed to have worn an Afghan army uniform.
“Anytime we lose a member of our team, it is deeply painful,” said Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan. “Our sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and the units of those involved in this incident.”
The victims were part of the NATO train, advise and assist mission for Afghan security services. An investigation is ongoing and names are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
