John Kasich: The Republican Party is ‘shrinking’

Gov. John Kasich, R-Ohio, believes his party is on the decline.

“Unfortunately, our party is shrinking,” Kasich said during an interview Sunday with CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” “We’re now down to about 25 percent. It’s all becoming like a remnant.”

Kasich used as an example Republican Troy Balderson’s win in the tight special election in August to represent Ohio’s 12th Congressional District, a traditionally safe seat Kasich once won by typically significant margins.

But he added that both major political parties “go through this.”

“You know, we spend so much time talking about how lost the Republicans are, but you think about the Democratic Party moving farther and farther to the left,” Kasich said. “Our country is center right or center left. It’s not on the extremes. Your political party shouldn’t matter so much. Vote for the person.”

Kasich, a two-time GOP presidential candidate, also didn’t rule out launching an independent bid for the White House in 2020.
