Good Day Baltimore: Big in Japan at The 8×10

Published December 30, 2008 5:00am ET

Big in Japan — the mostly instrumental trio of Matt Pierce on Rhodes piano, flute and vocals; James Griffith on bass and guitar and Michael Lowry on drums — plays a sound often characterized as sweeping and cinematic and furiously bombastic. Though they rely mostly on wholly improvised material (foregoing traditional songs) while performing, they eschew more traditional improvised forms such as soloing — preferring to take a songwriter’s approach to their improvised material. Don’t miss their rare appearance with The Water. 8 p.m. $12. The 8×10, 10 E. Cross St., Baltimore. 410-625-2000; www.the8x10.com
