A walk outdoors and through the graciously designed interior rooms of Long Crandon evokes a fantasy world of wealth, status and privilege.
Long Crandon is the site of the 31st annual Decorators? Show House presented by the Baltimore Symphony Associates and features the decorative artistry of more than 25 Maryland designers and landscape artists.
“Long Crandon is a lovely home that lends itself beautifully to this project,” said Show House Chairwoman Winnie Flattery, who added that all proceeds benefit the Baltimore Symphony education programs.
The English Georgian, four-story, 11,500-square-foot brick house was built in 1920 by architect Pleasant Pennington for Margaretta and William Wallace Lanahan.
The magnificent estate was the scene of many elegant parties, with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor numbering among its guests in 1941.
“The design teams recreated the glamour of a bygone era,” Flattery said.
That glamour is evident in the grand foyer, designed by JBrown Decorators. Spicy red walls, antiques and magnificent oil paintings welcome visitors and offer a dramatic first impression.
Large, high-ceilinged rooms flow easily, one into the other, each bearing the handprint of a different local decorator.
“Architecturally, this is the most beautiful house the symphony has ever had,” said Russell Slouck of Gatehouse Interiors. Slouck designed the family/media room predominately in black and white, accentuating a relaxed elegance.
Gail Lieberman, who worked on the intimate dining room off the main dining hall, fell in love with the room?s intricate dentil molding at the ceiling.
“I walked in, saw the molding, and knew it had to be gold,” she said.
Many items in the rooms are for sale. Additional vendors in the house sell a variety of home accessories. A beautifully decorated café on the property offers light meals.
