NH health insurance agents keeping options open

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — In a recent survey, more than half of New Hampshire insurance agents said they will sign up to sell plans through the new marketplaces required under the federal health overhaul law. But how many actually follow through will depend on whether it’s worth their while financially.

The new insurance markets will offer individuals and families a choice of private health plans resembling what workers at major companies already get. Enrollment starts Oct. 1, with coverage taking effect Jan. 1.

For many New Hampshire insurance agents, deciding whether to sell plans through the markets depends on what kind of commission they stand to earn. Insurers also worry about the workload and compressed enrollment period. While the first enrollment period lasts six months, in later years it will be eight weeks.
