House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters on Tuesday said Democrats won’t drop their effort to obtain President Trump’s financial records from two banks in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Trump and his children to block their access.
“I am not surprised at all, but we will fight him back,” Waters, D-Calif., said Tuesday after a closed-door meeting with Democrats in the basement of the Capitol.
Trump, three of his children, and the Trump Organization sued Deutsche Bank and Capital One on Monday to stop them from complying with subpoenas issued by the Financial Services panel and the House Intelligence Committee.
Waters said she believes the banks will ultimately turn over the records, which they were planning to do before the lawsuit was filed.
“We have representation from Deutsche Bank and Capitol One that … will cooperate with us, so he can file his lawsuits,” Waters said.
“They needed a subpoena in order to do what they need to do to give us the documents. They’ve said they will cooperate so, so far, his lawsuits aren’t doing any good.”
Trump’s lawsuit alleges the subpoenas “were issued to harass President Donald J. Trump, to rummage through every aspect of his personal finances, his businesses and the private information of the president and his family, and to ferret about for any material that might be used to cause him political damage. No grounds exist to establish any purpose other than a political one.”
Waters and Intelligence panel Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., are seeking information about business the banks conducted with a series of suspected Russian and other Eastern European money launderers.
