Canada closing borders to most foreigners, but US citizens and diplomats exempt

Canada is barring most foreigners and nonresidents from entering the country to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday.

Exemptions will be made for U.S. citizens, aircrews, diplomats, and immediate family members of Canadian citizens, he said.

Canada has 375 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with one death resulting thus far from the virus.

New York and Washington state, both of which border Canada, have been the hotbeds for the outbreak in the United States. Both states are nearing 1,000 confirmed cases each.

Trudeau’s wife, Sophie, tested positive for the coronavirus last week after she experienced a low-grade fever and other mild flu-like symptoms.

The couple and their three children are self-quarantining for two weeks as “a precautionary measure.”
