Two Americans injured in Berlin attack

Two U.S. citizens were injured in Monday’s terrorist attack in Berlin in which a man who is still at large drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market.

“We have been informed by German authorities that two Americans were injured in the Berlin Christmas market incident,” a U.S. embassy spokesperson told ABC News. “As of yesterday, one remained hospitalized and the other had already been treated and released. We cannot release further information due to Privacy Act considerations.”

The State Department had said Tuesday it wasn’t aware of any Americans being hurt or killed in the incident, which killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

Police in Germany initially arrested someone they thought was the driver, but the suspected driver is still at large. Authorities are looking for Anis Amri, a 24-year-old Tunisian immigrant whose fingerprints were found in the truck.

Amri’s status as an immigrant that authorities were trying to deport has led to new complaints about Germany’s open borders, in light of this attack and others carried out by non-citizens.
