New York City lost its first resident under the age of 18 to the coronavirus.

The patient suffered underlying health conditions that made COVID-19 exceptionally dangerous and died on Monday. While the incident marked the city’s first death of a minor from the coronavirus, the person was not the first minor to die from the illness in the United States.

Los Angeles was home to the first child to die from COVID-19 in the country. Since that death, Louisiana and Illinois have each lost a minor to the virus.

The coronavirus tends not to fatally infect children. Elderly people and those with underlying health conditions are the most at risk for a fatal reaction to the virus. Of those who died from it in New York City, only 13 lacked a documented preexisting condition.

New York has been the hardest-hit state in the nation since the pandemic began. As of Monday, more than 66,000 New Yorkers had confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and 1,218 had died after testing positive for COVID-19. The U.S. has nearly 157,000 cases total with more than 2,800 related deaths.
