Two ‘chiefs’ for D.C. police?

The District apparently has a new chief of police.

No, police Chief Cathy Lanier hasn’t gone anywhere, but the department has promoted assistant chief of police Alfred Durham to the rank of chief of police, according to department payroll records obtained by The Washington Examiner.

In December, The Examiner reported how Durham was earning about $178,000, which included a 10 percent pay increase that’s meant for officers who serve 20 continuous years with the department. Durham has served with the department for more than 20 years, but it was not continuous. In 2005, he left for two years to work for the Richmond Police Department.

Payroll records show that the department has since stripped Durham of the “longevity” pay increase and promoted him to chief of police, keeping his salary exactly as it was when he was receiving the extra 10 percent in his pay.

The police department has not yet responded to a request for comment.
