Jimmy Patsos was hired four years ago to revive a Loyola men’s basketball team coming off a 1-27 season. The Catholic University graduate and assistant at Maryland under Coach Gary Williams when the Terrapins won the national championship in 2002 is known for his fiery demeanor and propensity to draw technical fouls. But starting last season, Patsos, 42, has learned to control his emotions, even wearing a silver peace sign on a band around his wrist, as he continues to put Loyola on the basketball map.
If I could improve one thing about yourself what would it be?
I would like to get in better shape and I am working toward it. Diet, more exercise, giving up drinking — I haven’t had a drink in more than four months. The weight wasn’t going to come off any other way. We have a young team and I want to lead by example. Reverend Brian Linnane, our president, he leads by example, and I take some cues from him. I have a lot to work on but a lot to be grateful for.
