D.C. needs more good schools like Wilson Re: “Wilson High burning and busting at the seams,” Nov. 1

Harry Jaffe says that Wilson High School’s academic improvements make it newly desirable to in-boundary children, which will push out future out-of bounds students and limit “diversity.” I couldn’t agree less.

In my in-boundary Upper Northwest moms and infants support group, families hail from India, Japan, Tunisia, Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Hong Kong, England, and all over the United States. Our customs and worldviews vary widely. What better basis for a lively, diverse student population?

The current commute for some out-of-boundary kids is unsustainable, robbing students of precious time they need for sleeping or studying. Rather than mourning the fact that Upper Northwest parents now see Wilson as a viable option, we should be asking how other District high schools can replicate Wilson’s academic success.

Group promotes kindness to exploited greyhounds

Re: “Dog racing struggles to keep pace,” Oct. 30

As the largest nonprofit greyhound protection organization in the country, GREY2K USA believes dog racing is cruel and inhumane. Texas Racing Commission records document 1,351 greyhound injuries at Gulf Greyhound Park between January 2008 and Aug. 4, 2011, including 49 deaths and euthanasias.

Public awareness of the cruelty of dog racing is contributing to its decline. We cannot fathom our dogs enduring inhumane confinement or risking injury and death racing around an oval so people can bet on them. Our dogs are not investments to be valued only as long as they generate a profit. Nor can we imagine not caring for our dogs if they become injured or as they age.

I have personally adopted beloved ex-racing greyhounds since 1997, and I am a board member of GREY2K USA. For more information, please visit grey2kusa.org.

Eric Holder should resign

Attorney General Eric Holder should resign.

The ATF’s Fast and Furious program was an illegal operation allowing more then 2,000 guns, including automatic weapons, to get into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels. This is a disgrace and a gross violation of our border security.

The attorney general was personally involved, and his immediate resignation should be demanded by Congress, which should also investigate what President Obama knew and when he knew it.
