Liz Cheney floats Jan. 6 subpoena for Ginni Thomas

The Jan. 6 committee is “fully willing to contemplate a subpoena” of Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, according to committee Vice Chairman Liz Cheney (R-WY).

The congresswoman’s comments Sunday mark an escalation in talks with Ginni Thomas, whose testimony has been sought by congressional investigators after some of her private communications were revealed, showing she spoke with people in former President Donald Trump’s orbit about overturning the 2020 election results.

“The committee is engaged with her counsel. We hope she’ll agree to come in voluntarily. The committee is fully prepared to contemplate a subpoena if she does not,” Cheney told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday. “I hope it doesn’t get to that.”

Ginni Thomas drew scrutiny with her emails, particularly to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, pushing him to back efforts to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory. She also was in contact with legal scholar John Eastman, created a pair of memos for the Trump campaign in the buildup to Jan. 6 relaying a strategy to block the certification of election results, and emailed at least 29 Arizona lawmakers, asking them to choose new electors to overturn Trump’s loss in the state, according to the Washington Post.

Ginni Thomas previously signaled willingness to cooperate with the Jan 6 committee, saying she “can’t wait to clear up misconceptions.” However, her lawyer Mark Paoletta sent a letter to the committee in late June, saying he didn’t understand the need for his client to appear before the committee and asking for better justification.

The Supreme Court rejected a request from Trump in January to block the release of White House records from the Jan. 6 panel, and Clarence Thomas was the only member of the court to dissent and side with the former president.
