The shooting happened outside of the 16th annual “Hood-nic” event, organized by the Delta Neighborhood Empowerment Youth Organization. Organizers told KARK that the event was an attempt to promote nonviolence.

“Multiple gunmen just started shooting” at the event around 6:50 p.m. local time, according to witnesses. Police were dispatched at 7:25 p.m. after gunfire was heard outside a local business near the car show.

The event organizer, Wallace McGehee, expressed condolences for the shooting victims. “For something like this to happen, it’s a tragedy,” McGehee told KATV. “We did this here for 16 years without a problem.”
