For those looking for an eyeful on New Year’s Eve that doesn’t involve tipsy revelers tottering on bars, one sure bet is Art Romp 19.
Now an annual tradition at the Warehouse arts complex downtown, the creative extravaganza will feature painting, sculpture, installations, photography and video piecesfrom approximately 40 artists based in the D.C. area. As she organized the flow of entries, Warehouse owner/manager Molly Ruppert explained how the artworks would be hung in 10 gallery spaces throughout the complex — creating a multisensory fun house crackling with creativity.
Think you’re seeing things? Crazy visions? Refreshingly, at this venue, the source is more likely art than alcohol.
On and off-the-hook pieces include fresh eclectica from first-time Warehouse exhibitors to Romp regulars who participated in the first show. Originally conceived as a one-time event, Art Romp got on a roll, guaranteeing art-loving hipsters a fresh way to kick off the synapses along with the new year.
The celebration starts with a picnic in the parking lot, which Ruppert calls an all-weather affair “barring tornadoes.” Most of the artists will be on hand to explain their work, which is sure to lead to some spirited exegesis.
For those who want to stick around and ring in the new year at the Warehouse, there’s a choice of two ticketed shows. “Son of a Bush” delivers a nonpartisan mixed bag of political satire. For a wilder night, Lobster Boy Revue directs a torrent of twisted songs, gruesome games, funky films and off-color jokes, breaking for a champagne toast at midnight. The contemporary vaudeville show dials up the freak factor with neo-burlesque queen Trixie Little and simian super-villain Evil Hate Monkey.
Sounds like a refreshing way to rev up New Year’s Eve. And the senses.
