Jim Carrey says he is “fairly serious” about retiring from acting.
The Hollywood star, famous for his roles in movies such as The Truman Show and Ace Ventura, made the admission during a promotional interview for his latest movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, on Thursday.
“I’m retiring,” Carrey said, a comment that came as a shock to Access Hollywood host Kit Hoover, who replied, “No!” She asked Carrey if she was “screwing” with her.
“I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey said. Asked to explain why, he said his future in Hollywood “depends” on whether he gets an offer he cannot refuse.
“If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break,” he said.

The topic came up after Hoover told Carrey that Dolly Parton said she would love to see Carrey play her former music partner Porter Wagoner in a biopic about her life.
Carrey, 60, has been in the Hollywood business for decades and rose to fame in the 1990s with films such as Dumb and Dumber and The Mask.
The actor said he feels he has done enough acting and wants to focus more on his spiritual and quiet life.
“I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough,” Carrey said. “I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Carrey has mentioned retirement in the past. In 2018, Carrey told the Hollywood Reporter that he was ready to leave the business because he did not like what was happening in the entertainment industry.
“I didn’t like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that,” Carrey said. “Maybe it’s because I felt pulled toward a different type of creative outlet and I really liked the control of painting — of not having a committee in the way telling me what the idea must be to appeal to a four-quadrant whatever.”

Carrey returned to Hollywood in 2018 as Jeff Pickles in the Showtime television series Kidding, which ran for two seasons. He more recently collaborated with The Weeknd on his latest album Dawn FM, which came out in January. His next film, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, a video game adaption in which he plays the villainous Dr. Robotnik, is set to premiere in June.
