A Washington, D.C., nonprofit watchdog filed a complaint against U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley when she retweeted President Trump’s call to vote for a South Carolina Republican congressional candidate.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said, “Haley likely violated the Hatch Act by retweeting the first of a chain of tweets that President Trump posted in support of the election of Ralph Norman,” in a statement.
The retweet has since been deleted from her verified Twitter account.
The Hatch Act prohibits executive branch employees from engaging in certain forms of political activity. Norman later went on to win the June 20 special election.
Office of Special Counsel guidelines advise employees against using official social media accounts “to engage in political activity,” according to the statement.
OSC previously reprimanded the White House’s social media director Dan Scavino for using his official Twitter account, “to call for the defeat of a member of Congress in a primary election,” according to the statement.
Haley is the former governor of South Carolina.
