An orthopedic surgeon is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say she attempted to kidnap her son during a supervised visit earlier this month, injuring the person tasked with overseeing the visit in the process.
Theresa Colosi, 55, was visiting her 12-year-old son on the morning of Dec. 8 when the woman assigned by a court to supervise their visit noticed she was acting suspiciously. Within seconds, Colosi swung a large, metal object at the woman’s head multiple times, according to officials.
The woman instructed the boy to call for help, and the mother ran after the child before fleeing to her car instead. She then hopped on a private jet she had chartered and flew to Glacier International Airport in Montana.
According to detectives, Colosi had given away all of her possessions, withdrew $900,000 from her bank account, and chartered the flight using false names for herself and her son. Officials said the moves led authorities to believe she was attempting to kidnap her son.
In coordination with Montana police, detectives surveilled her hideout. Within three days, Colosi left the property in a cab and was promptly arrested. On Thursday, she was extradited back to California and is currently being held in jail without bail.
She faces felony charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted kidnapping, and attempted child-stealing. She was also hit with a misdemeanor count of violating a court order and possible sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury and using a deadly weapon.
Colosi is a licensed physician in the state of California and specializes in orthopedic surgery and oncology.
