Lindsey Graham led GOP intervention at Trump dinner on emergency declaration

Three GOP senators reportedly made a trip Wednesday evening to the White House to urge President Trump to negotiate with Republicans who dislike his national emergency declaration to redirect billions of dollars to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Ben Sasse of Nebraska show up in the middle of the president’s dinner with first lady Melania Trump to come up with some sort of deal.

“I said thank you for meeting with us. Sorry we ruined your dinner. And again, if it’d been me, I would have kicked us out after about five minutes,” Graham said, according to the Washington Post. Graham said he called ahead of time and got approval from Trump to show up with his colleagues.

Nothing immediately came from the intervention, but Graham isn’t letting go of hope.

“With Trump, everything is possible,” Graham said. “Rabbits being pulled out of a hat are just everyday business.”

The Senate is poised to vote Thursday on a House-passed resolution opposing his border emergency. On Wednesday, Trump rejected a plan to scale back emergency authority in an effort to win over Republicans who threaten to give Democrats enough support to pass the resolution to put it on Trump’s desk, where he is certain to veto it. There are unlikely enough votes in Congress to overcome a veto.
