Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich went on the defensive early Friday to try to stem any backlash to his comments about Muslims and Shariah law the night before.
“Amazing distortions of my interview on Hannity last night.i will do a lengthy facebook live later this morning on the issue of sharia,” Gingrich wrote on Twitter Friday morning.

In another tweet, he attempted to elaborate what he meant by his comments that the United States should screen all Muslims and deport supporters of Shariah.
“We clearly need three patterns dealing with Islamist terrorism:for people seeking to get into America, those with green cards, for citizens,” he said in a separate tweet.

He then added: “The hysteria of the media overreaction to my comments on the Nice attack is very revealing.watch my facebook live later today.”

Late Thursday night in the wake of the presumed terror attack in Nice, France, Gingrich told Fox News host Sean Hannity: “We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background and if they believe in Shariah, they should be deported. Shariah is incompatible with western civilization. Modern Muslims who have given up Shariah — glad to have them as citizens.”
Gingrich is still on the shortlist to be presumed Republican nominee Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, though reports indicate that the position will be given to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
The Nice attack during Bastille Day celebrations left at least 84 dead — including two Americans — when a man drove a large truck through a crowd.
