SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Researchers at the University of Rhode Island are being honored for developing a novel way to vaccinate fish.
Professors Marta Gomez-Chiarri (chi-ARE’-ee) and David Nelson created a way to vaccinate fish by immersing them in a vaccine bath. The process is considered easier and less expensive that existing, which involve injecting one fish after another with vaccinations.
The two professors recently received a university award for their patented process.
Fish vaccinations are used in fish farms to prevent outbreaks of disease.
The researchers are now working to commercialize their vaccination method.
