Giuliani: Comey’s letter ‘came as a complete surprise’

Rudy Giuliani on Friday evening denied knowing about FBI Director Jim Comey’s announcement to Congress last week about new emails appearing related to Hillary Clinton’s case.

“That came as a complete surprise to me,” the former New York mayor and top Donald Trump adviser said.

Giuliani, appearing on “Fox and Friends” Friday morning, said, “You’re darn right I hear about it” when questioned whether he had heard about Comey’s decision prior to the announcement.

When CNN’s Wolf Blitzer questioned him about it, he said he was referring to “tremendous anger within the FBI” surrounding Comey’s decision this summer to not indict Hillary Clinton and the treatment agents had been receiving by the Justice Department.

“I was referring to the consternation in the FBI,” he said. “About the way, number one, Jim Comey’s conclusion and, number two, the way they believed they were being obstructed by what they regard as a pretty corrupt Obama Justice Department.”

He also spoke about the interview he did on Fox News last Friday where he hinted at a big surprise that the Trump campaign had. He said he was referring to the advertising blitz the Trump campaign had planned for the end of the campaign.

“There were a couple of other things that were being considered as what was going to be done in the last four days of the campaign,” Giuliani said. “What I was talking about was a push at the end to try to get Donald Trump’s message out.”

Blitzer questioned if he was willing to testify to the inspector general as Reps. Elijah Cummings and John Conyers had suggested. Cummings and Conyers on Friday asked the Justice Department’s inspector general to investigate leaks inside the FBI.

“Yeah, I don’t know anything about leaks from the FBI or the Justice Department,” he said. “I will not, like the people around Hillary Clinton, take the Fifth Amendment or ask for immunity.”

He also added that he had not received information from FBI agents, unlike he had told Lars Larson on a radio show.

“All the information I have comes from newspapers, books and some former FBI agents,” Giuliani said.

Giuliani also commented on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s aides testifying that he knew about the Bridgegate lane closures.

“I’m not going to turn my back on a friend because some people at a trial as part of their defense used that as their defense,” he said.
