Russian government websites go down hours after Ukraine invasion

Several notable Russian government websites appear to be down amid the invasion of Ukraine.

The websites that appeared to be down included the Kremlin website, Kremlin.ru, as well as the website for the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia.

It is unclear why the websites are down or whether this occurred as part of a third party attacking the websites.

Multiple cyberattacks have struck Ukrainian websites in recent weeks. A distributed-denial-of-service attack hit the websites for the Ukraine Defense Ministry and several banks on Feb. 15, an attack that Ukraine and White House officials suspect to originate with Russia.

A similar set of cyberattacks struck Ukraine’s seven ministries, the Treasury, the National Emergency Service, and others on Jan. 14. The Jan. 14 attacks included a warning telling the Ukrainian government to “Be afraid and expect the worst. This is for your past, present and future.”

The sites went down on Thursday, several hours after Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia began its invasion of Ukraine late Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin announced that he was sending his forces into Donbas, a region that attempted to declare itself separate from Ukraine, on a “special military operation.” Since then, Russian troops have entered the country from three directions and appear to be targeting Kyiv. Ukrainian officials report that at least 57 Ukrainians have been killed in the conflict so far.
