China is the world’s largest energy consumer and the biggest consumer of coal, responsible for 27% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions in recent years. U.S. officials said in Dec. 2021 that China needs to step up its carbon reduction plans, as the country has shown no interest in moving up its timeline to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 or for its carbon emissions to peak by 2030.
