D.C. deals with potential wintery mess

Water mains continued to burst, a plow truck spilled its load and federal employees and students were sent home early Tuesday as the D.C. metropolitan area remained under a two-day winter storm warning.

In Virginia, Gov. Timothy Kaine declared a statewide emergency in anticipation of up to a 1/2-inch of sleet and ice that would make driving difficult and could knock out electrical power in some areas.

The National Weather Service triggered the storm warning after their weather models predicted a quarter of an inch of accumulated ice, said meteorologist Howard Silverman.

The result could mean a wintery mess.

“Get a ruler out,” said D.C. Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Jo’Ellen Countee. “That’s a lot of ice.”

Emergency crews in D.C., Maryland and Virginia prepared the roads for the weather and were on standby to clear debris.
