South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem touted her state’s handling of the coronavirus in schools, calling in-person learning “the best decision” for students’ “overall health.”
“South Dakota students have been learning IN THE CLASSROOM this entire school year,” Noem tweeted Tuesday. “It’s the best decision for their overall health. And it’s the best way that we can help them learn and grow for a lifetime of success.”

Many schools across the country remain closed over coronavirus fears despite studies both domestically and internationally, including from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showing a low rate of coronavirus transmission in schools.
Noem, a Republican, has been panned by liberals and praised by conservatives for avoiding strict lockdown measures and instead placing an emphasis on personal responsibility and liberty.
“I took an oath when I was in Congress to uphold the United States Constitution,” Noem said in April, as several states were imposing lockdowns and mandating social distancing measures. “So, I believe in people’s freedoms and liberties, and I always balance that with every decision that I make as governor. I get overly concerned with leaders who take too much power in a time of crisis because I think that’s how we directly lose our country someday by leaders overstepping their proper role.”
‘FLORIDA GOT IT RIGHT’: RON DESANTIS TOUTS CORONAVIRUS LEADERSHIP
Over the weekend, attendees at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference voted Noem as their second choice to run for president if former President Donald Trump does not enter the race. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has also opposed lockdowns, came in as their first choice if Trump isn’t in the race.
The poll came after Noem addressed the CPAC crowd and declared it was the government that crushed state economies across the country during the pandemic and not the coronavirus.

“COVID didn’t crush the economy. Government crushed the economy,” Noem said in a speech. “South Dakota is the only state in America that never ordered a single business or church to close.”
