California police arrested and charged a teenager with murder Tuesday after the overdose death of a 12-year-old girl.
The San Jose Police Department arrested a 16-year-old who sold a fentanyl pill to a minor in November 2020, the department announced in a news release Tuesday. The minor, identified as Jane Doe, died shortly after taking three-quarters of a single pill of the drug, making her the youngest person in Santa Clara County to succumb to a fatal overdose that year.
“After thousands of deaths, everyone should know that fentanyl is a deadly poison,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “Thanks to the San Jose Police Department, the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team, and our investigators, this child’s tragically short life may help save others.”

Doe was with two other teenagers on Nov. 14, 2020, when she contacted the suspect and bought a pill called “M-30,” officials said. After snorting most of the pill, she passed out and began snoring, and she was later declared dead after the teenagers brought her to the Regional Medical Center in San Jose, according to the news release.
After arresting the 16-year-old minor Tuesday, authorities found screenshots of public service warnings over fentanyl overdoses in the dealer’s Google Photos account that predated the minor’s death, according to the news release.

The charged minor faces incarceration if convicted.
The SJPD has warned about the dangers of fentanyl, stating it “is approximately 50 to 100 times more toxic than morphine.” If a drug dealer gives a person a pill containing fentanyl and the person dies because of it, “you can be charged with murder,” the department said.
