Roy Moore on Kavanaugh allegations: Democrats don’t care about transparency

Former Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, who was accused last fall by multiple women of sexual misconduct, claimed that Democrats were targeting Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to block his confirmation. The comments come as Kavanaugh has battled an allegation of sexual misconduct.

“It’s so obvious that these tactics are used just days before a very important event like this, a Senate confirmation,” Moore said in an interview with One America News Network on Wednesday. “It’s right in the midst of a confirmation hearing.”

“I think Republicans need to take a stand,” Moore added.

Christine Blasey Ford, a 51-year-old professor at Palo Alto University in California, accused Kavanaugh of forcing himself upon her in the 1980s while they were both in high school. The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Ford took a polygraph test, which indicated she was being honest detailing the alleged incident.

Kavanaugh has adamantly denied the allegation.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., knew about the allegations for weeks but only referred a letter from Ford to the FBI last week as details of her allegation became public.

“I think it’s reflective of what’s really happening that these allegations come in the midst of a Senate confirmation for the United States Supreme Court, just as they did in my case,” Moore said.

Moore said that Democrats “don’t care about transparency, they just use it because it’s effective.” He claimed that they understand it’s a “catch-22” because they know women will be offended if you believe “someone who says they weren’t guilty.” But if you don’t believe the accused, Moore said, “you’re condemning the person accused to guilt” before there is an opportunity to prove innocence.

Four women, some of whom were as young as 14 at the time of the alleged sexual misconduct, leveled accusations against Moore last fall, just before a special election between Moore and his Democratic challenger, Doug Jones.

The women told the Washington Post on the record that the former judge took them on dates and brought them back to his home, despite the fact he was nearly twice their age and they were between the ages of 14 and 18. Other women came forward with additional allegations afterwards.
