President Trump accused Democrats on Wednesday of tying up his infrastructure so that congressional Republicans fail to notch another victory ahead of the November midterm elections.
“The Democrats don’t want to approve it because they don’t want to give us a victory. They think we have too many victories,” Trump said in remarks to Latino business leaders in Washington.
“The Democrats are nowhere to be found,” he later added, claiming his administration is “ready, willing, and able” to push forward on its trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal and a legislative fix for young undocumented immigrants.
Trump’s assertion may strike his political opponents as odd. Many Democrats who are up for re-election in 2018 have sought to cast Republicans too divided to accomplish anything, claiming they’ve done little with their congressional majority aside from passing a tax bill last December.
But Trump accused Democrats of obstructing his administration’s agenda at every turn, claiming they have blocked judicial nominations and progress on immigration reform for political purposes.
“They don’t care about the immigration system, or reform. They’d rather use it to get elected,” he said. “That’s not working so well.”
