Montgomery approves sewer hookup for billionaire’s gallery

Montgomery County lawmakers on Tuesday unanimously approved Potomac billionaire Mitchell Rales’ request for a sewer hookup to his art gallery.

Rales, whose 127.7 acre estate is outside the county’s approved sewer system plan, applied for the sewer connection so that he can expand Glenstone, his private art collection that he opens to visitors by appointment on Thursdays and Fridays.

Now that the Danaher Corp. co-founder has the Montgomery County Council’s stamp of approval, the request goes to the Maryland Department of the Environment before moving onto more planning and design regulatory hurdles.

Rales hopes to begin construction by the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014, and to open the new gallery within three to five years, according to spokesman Charles Maier.
