After sending a tweet claiming she was sexually assaulted, a protester went missing and hasn’t been seen since Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida.
Oluwatoyin Salau, who is 19, was protesting in Florida for the Black Lives Matter movement that has been highly active around the country since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody last month.
Salau tweeted that a man molested her on Saturday morning and that he offered to give her a ride back to a church where she sought “refuge” because of “unjust living conditions,” according to USA Today.
Shortly before her disappearance, Salau tweeted that the man “came disguised as a man of God and ended up picking me up from nearby Saxon Street. I trusted the holy spirit to keep me safe.”
Salau said she called police after the assault happened and didn’t specify at which church she had been staying.
Several people reached out to Salau on Twitter offering to help and asking if she was OK, but she never responded and hasn’t tweeted since.
The Tallahassee Community Action Agency organized a search party Wednesday night along with other demonstrators who searched for hours for Salau. Medics joined the team in case she was hurt. TCAC also started a social media campaign captioning, “Have you seen me?” with fliers and photos of Salau.
Salau is described as last seen wearing white Crocs, black shorts, and a black top.
The Tallahassee Police Department’s Special Victims Unit is investigating.
