Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden picked up a major endorsement from the top environmental organization in the United States.
The Sierra Club announced its intent to back Biden in the general election on Monday, and Executive Director Michael Brune said the group was “confident” the former vice president is the person most qualified to “champion” climate issues.
“We are confident that Joe Biden will be the champion for climate justice that America needs in the White House,” Brune said in a statement. “As Americans head to the polls in November, our country will be facing crises on multiple fronts, including a climate emergency that disproportionately harms communities of color.”
The endorsement is not surprising given the tense relationship between the organization and President Trump, whom Brune admonished in the statement endorsing Biden.
“No president has been worse for our environment or our nation’s public health than Donald Trump,” he said. “He has sold off our public lands to corporate polluters, waged unprecedented attacks on environmental protections, and prioritized the desires of fossil fuel company executives over the best interests of the American people at every turn.”
Biden has signaled his intention to roll out a series of high-dollar infrastructure projects aimed at reducing the U.S. footprint on climate change, including a $2 trillion plan focused on making the generation of electricity carbon-free by 2035.
